ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carey Roess is a self-taught artist whose creative journey is profoundly shaped by her connections with animals and nature, her enriching experiences in Japan, and her passion for the French language. Each of these elements significantly influences her artistic exploration.

In these inspiring surroundings, Carey’s creativity flourishes, allowing her passion for art to truly shine. She primarily employs acrylics, watercolors, and ink to craft vibrant, emotive pieces that resonate deeply with her audience.

As an abstract expressionist, Carey creates beautifully detailed and emotionally evocative works of art. Inspired by the waning appreciation for intricate details in contemporary art and culture, she aims to counter this trend by infusing her creations with vivid colors and striking imagery. Drawing upon her travels across various cultures and her bond with the natural world, Carey transforms organic shapes and landscapes into captivating abstract compositions.

With fluid lines and layered textures, Carey masterfully encapsulates the raw beauty of her subjects—whether alive or inanimate—inviting viewers to explore their own connections to the harmony and chaos that characterize the natural world.

What are your artistic influences?

Japan, along with East Asia as a whole, has had an incredibly profound and lasting influence on me. The seamless and elegant blend of ancient traditions with the vibrancy of modern art and culture feels both completely natural and effortlessly harmonious in every way.

I frequently title my works in French or Japanese. I find naming my pieces to be a challenging task, so using these languages alleviates the pressure and allows the titles to feel more intrinsic to the work.

What is your personal artistic philosophy?

A rejection of the norm. Conformity as an erasure of individuality as seen in art and architecture. The pushback against homogenization. In a world increasingly driven by trends and mass production, the rejection of uniformity allows for the preservation of cultural identity and personal expression. Artists and architects who challenge conventional ideals are not only questioning societal standards but are paving the way for innovation and creative freedom. By breaking free from the confines of conformity, they inspire a deeper appreciation for the uniqueness that comes from independent thought and craftsmanship.
