ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carey Roess is a self-taught artist deeply inspired by the places she’s called home: Winnipeg, MB, Summerland, BC, and Kyushu, Japan. Each location has played a significant role in shaping her creative journey and artistic exploration. It is in these inspiring settings that her creativity flourishes, bringing her passion for art to life. Carey primarily works with acrylics, watercolours, and ink, creating pieces that are vibrant and emotive.

As an abstract expressionist, Carey crafts exquisitely detailed, vibrant, and deeply emotive works of art. Deeply inspired by the diminishing attention to detail in modern art and culture, she seeks to challenge this trend by bringing her work to life with vivid colors and striking imagery. Drawing from her travels across diverse cultures and her connection to the natural world, Carey transforms organic shapes and landscapes into captivating abstract compositions.

With fluid lines and layered textures, Carey masterfully captures the raw beauty of her subjects—whether living or inanimate—inviting viewers to discover their own connection to the harmony and chaos that define the natural world.

What is your personal artistic philosophy?

A rejection of the norm. Conformity as an erasure of individuality as seen in art and architecture. The pushback against homogenization. In a world increasingly driven by trends and mass production, the rejection of uniformity allows for the preservation of cultural identity and personal expression. Artists and architects who challenge conventional ideals are not only questioning societal standards but are paving the way for innovation and creative freedom. By breaking free from the confines of conformity, they inspire a deeper appreciation for the uniqueness that comes from independent thought and craftsmanship.
